The last month of 2024 has seen many of our local farmers facing a future which includes Labour’s Family Farm Tax, a change to the way in which inheritance tax on farms (which are, of course, businesses) will work as the land and assets pass from generation to generation.
I have spoken to farmers who are in tears about the future of their farms and their children and grandchildren’s livelihoods. I managed to bring a group of our Ongar farmers together with others from Brentwood to discuss their concerns, and was pleased to see many of them in the mass lobby of Parliament last month.
Farming is one of the biggest industries in the Brentwood and Ongar constituency, but Labour’s tax is devastating for our farming community. I and my Conservative colleagues will be fighting every step of the way to say the future of UK farms and farming.
It’s clear from the 2.6 million plus signatures on a petition to call for another General Election that the Labour Government has not lived up to the hopes of those who chose to vote for that party, so I suspect 2025 will be an interesting year in politics.
As always, please get in touch with me if there is anything I can do to assist you, and all good wishes to you and your families for Christmas and the New Year.
