Saturday evening saw a truly remarkable event at the Brentwood Centre when the Brentwood Imperial Youth Band played a concert to raise money for the people of Ukraine. There was a fantastic turn out and some moving testimonies from Ukrainians living in Brentwood about the difficulties their home country is facing.
The Youth Band is a real asset to the town, having been founded in 1990 it still charges the same membership subs as it did 32 years ago - £1 a week. Every year I’ve been greatly impressed by their playing and presentation on Remembrance Sunday at the war memorial. As well as representing our area with distinction at military tattoos across the globe they have given wonderful opportunities to several generations of local youngsters – we are very lucky to have them as part of our community.
The situation in Ukraine remains desperate but thanks to the event and those who supported it – notably, Brentwood Borough Council, Everyone Active and BeFibre – Brentwood has contributed to the cause, raising £20,000 for the British Red Cross’s humanitarian efforts in and around Ukraine. That money is badly needed to support the women and children who have had to flee or who have not been able to. If you have not yet had a chance to donate, please consider doing so.
