Pay As You Go (PAYG) ticketing - or Tap In Tap Out as many of us know it - has been extended by the Department for Transport to 53 more stations across the South East, including West Horndon Station on the C2C line in the south of the Brentwood and Ongar constituency.
Tapping in is already available at over 350 stations across London and the south east stretching from Reading and Gatwick Airport all the way to Shenfield and Welwyn Garden City and the Conservative Government committed to rolling it out in a further 200 stations in the 2019 manifesto.
The DfT has been working in partnership with five train operators and Transport for London (TfL) to upgrade ticketing facilities and these should be ready for passengers using West Horndon Station to use by the end of this year. Passengers will be able to use contactless bank cards and smart devices on rail, rather than needing to buy tickets in advance. This will make paying for rail travel quicker, easier, and simpler: supporting our priority to grow the economy, and fulfilling the commitment made by the Secretary of State in his Bradshaw Address in February.
PAYG will have a best price promise on the day – for most adult passengers this means that using PAYG will always provide them with the best price available on the day for a single day's travel. Further details on specific fares will be made available by train operators in due course.
Passengers who are unable to use PAYG or prefer to purchase a ticket in advance will continue to be able to do so.
