I was very pleased to be able to take part in the Ongar Town Festival activities this year, and we were very lucky with the weather.
Local fairs and festivals are always a great showcase for the community, and Ongar Town Festival has to be one of the best in my constituency of Brentwood and Ongar. I was pleased to see so many familiar faces, and the range of stalls and activities was amazing. I was particularly impressed by the array of well trained and talented dogs taking part.
The town came together too to celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III. I was delighted to join the commemorative service held by Ongar Churches Together at St Martin’s - a wonderful, dignified occasion to celebrate our new King.
Separately, I have been made aware of some baseless rumours about the future use of Essex House, on the High Street. Someone on a local social media chatter group seems to have suggested it was going to be turned into a house of multiple occupancy for dozens of asylum seekers and former prisoners.
As the local Member of Parliament I would be informed if the Home Office planned to use any properties in my constituency to house asylum seekers and no such information has been received.
I made inquiries with Epping Forest District Council about any planning applications involving the building. I have been informed an application (EPF/0415/23) has been made in respect of roof lights in a conservation area. However, no mention has been found of a change of use from Class E business use to residential.
I am aware this rumour circulating the town has caused distress to a number of my constituents and it is very unfortunate someone decided to circulate false information on local social media. Thanks to all those who brought it to my attention.
