A vital upgrade to improve journeys for hundreds of thousands of drivers using one of the busiest junctions on the M25 at Junction 28 (Brentwood) are going on show to the public this week.
National Highways will be holding a series of public information events where people will be able to hear more details about the first phase of preparation work, and when this work is due to start.
As many of my constituents know, Junction 28 plays a vital role in connecting the M25 with the A12, as well as providing local access to Brentwood and the A1023 Brook Street. However, it suffers from long queues and heavy congestion daily - National Highways have informed me that, at peak times, up to 7,500 vehicles per hour pass through the junction!
National Highways aim to improve the flow of traffic by allowing more capacity on the exit slip roads. This will provide a safer and more integrated network for everyone and there will also be less likelihood of traffic queuing back onto the M25 due to the reconfiguration of the junction.
The public information events will provide details of the planned work and timelines. Main construction work will include:
- building a new two-lane loop road, for traffic travelling from the M25 anti-clockwise onto the A12 eastbound (towards Brentwood). This will include the construction of new bridges to take the loop road over or under the other road links, and the Weald Brook; new signage and changes to the landscape
- changing the position of A12 eastbound exit slip road and M25 anti-clockwise entry slip road to allow for the new loop road
- widening the M25 anti-clockwise carriageway to provide more space for traffic leaving for the A12 eastbound
National Highways project manager Zachary Pepper, said:
Our plans to upgrade the M25 at Junction 28 will reduce congestion, improve journeys times and improve safety.
As we get closer to the start of work we are keen to update the local community and road users, as well as provide an opportunity for people to ask any questions they have. I encourage anyone interested in the scheme to come along to one of our public information events to find out more about the upgrade and see what we will be doing as we prepare to start work.”
National Highways will soon be launching a virtual information portal as well as holding face-to-face sessions to give road users the opportunity to meet the team and ask any questions they may have.

- Saturday 18 June – 9am – 2pm: Henderson Sports & Social Club, Kenilworth Avenue, Harold Park, Romford, RM3 9NE
