The news today that Ford is to significantly reduce its UK footprint with the loss of 1300 jobs, largely in Essex is very disappointing. Although the Ford Britain HQ moved from Brentwood to Dunton in 2018, I know many people in Brentwood still work for the car maker and will be worried about the future.
I've spoken to Ford today and understand this is the start of a three year consultation period, with no compulsory redundancies planned. Staff will be given the opportunity to consider voluntary redundancy and other options. I will work with Ford and its local employees to ensure those facing an uncertain future get the support they need both now, and in the future.
As a former Minister for Skills the loss of skilled jobs and the training opportunities which have been available locally is not good for the wider automotive sector, although I do appreciate Ford wants to restructure as it shifts its focus to Electric Vehicles (EVs).
